Welcome to the WASM Graduates Association Website

Welcome to the WASM Graduates’ Association website. This site has been established by the Committee and the members of the WASM Graduates’ Association, to provide an avenue for members to easily maintain their contacts and to aid in the growth of the Association’s membership base.

The Western Australian School of Mines is over 100 years old. The school was originally set up in Coolgardie in 1902 and by 1904 moved to its current location in Kalgoorlie. The first graduate from WASM was Solomon James Beech who graduated in 1906 as a Metallurgist. Since then over 2,400 students have become graduates of WASM. A detailed record of the WASM history was compiled in 2001 by author and historian Glen McLaren in a well titled book “Miners and Mentors” (A Centenary History of The Western Australian School of Mines).

The Graduates’ Association of the Western Australian School of Mines is an active Alumni group with long term ties to this historic and world famous mining school. The Western Australian School of Mines is one of the oldest educational institutions in Western Australia with over 100 years of history and has made a significant contribution to the mining and resources industry in WA and the rest of the world.

The WASM brand is one of the most recognised icons in the world of mining education and WASM Graduates proudly represent that brand in their lives and occupations.

Funds raised through membership of the WASM Graduates’ Association are used to promote the School and fund other Graduates association activities. The graduates association is always keen to build awareness among visitors and the general community as to the significance and history of WASM in the Goldfields region. The most recent project was the erection of a memorial to those Graduates who died on the job before reaching the age of retirement.

To become a new member or renew your membership of the WASM Graduates’ Association, you must be a graduate of either a WASM undergraduate or postgraduate program and have paid your annual membership fee or have been invited by the Committee to join as an Associate Member (generally a non graduate of WASM who has made a significant contribution to the School). Membership forms can be completed and payments made on the Memberships & Purchases page of this website.
